Calvin Leung is our QA/QC Manager at Method and he grew up in a small farm town in Arkansas with a passion for photography! He received his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Houston.
Check out our latest catch up with Calvin:
What is your role at Method?
As QA/QC Manager, I assess the quality of project documentation for meeting the standards of Method Architecture, this includes the constructability, the accuracy of the drawings and details, the incorporation of industry standards, and the compliance with the local codes and state regulations. I serve as a resource to the project teams to assist in developing solutions to issues encountered during construction documentation and in the construction phase of projects.
Where did you grow up?
I am a native Arkansan, I along with my six siblings grew up in a small farm community of Dermott located in southeast Arkansas, rich in growing cotton and soybeans. My parents ran a general store in town that provided groceries and staple goods to the local farmhands and their families.
What first interested you in architecture?
I had developed an artistic talent at a young age but I did not know how to utilize it. As I entered college, I studied pre-pharmacy, but after my first year, I knew my creative side was calling so I begin taking technical drawing classes the following year to validate my desire to continue into architecture.
The challenges from working on various building types over the past 38 years have taught me well. I continue to yearn to learn from architecture because it touches every facet of society by the ways we perceive and wear colors, by the sensitivities of the textures we touch, the shape of objects we encounter, and the comfort and warmth that light plays in our everyday life.
What is your favorite project you are currently working on and why?
My current project is not a physical structure but a building of knowledge base, to grow and to mentor our younger staff into the next generation of Architects for tomorrow. As the technology in architecture evolves, the tools we use have improved but the fundamentals in the art and science remain unchanged in the architectural practice.
What past project are you most proud of and why?
There are so many projects I have had the pleasure to work on. I believe a project should be judged by several factors: the design intent was successful, the budget was met and the project was delivered on time.
What do you enjoy most about working at Method?
It is a casual creative environment with open collaboration where everyone works hard to provide great service and quality designs that are cost efficient to meet the needs of our clients.
Outside of work, what are your favorite hobbies and things to do?
Now that my children are adults, I can spend more time on my photography. I am always thinking about my next photographic adventure, whether it’s a short weekend trip or a long excursion on the road. My favorite medium is black and white by virtue of using light, shadow, and texture to create the image.
