We’re thrilled to welcome Sam Stevens to the Method team as our newest Senior Project Manager in San Antonio!
He recently joined Method Architecture as a Senior Project Manager, bringing 14 years of experience across a range of project types, from large-scale sports facilities to community-driven adaptive reuse developments.
Getting to know Sam
Sam began his career in Detroit, where he attended the University of Detroit Mercy. His early years were spent designing major sports and entertainment venues, including the Daytona Speedway renovation, the USTA campus in New York, and the Lakers’ practice facility in California.
Eventually, Sam relocated to San Antonio after deciding to trade cold winters for something warmer. He spent eight years working on high-impact local projects. After growing with his past firm for nearly a decade, he was ready for something new and set his sights on Method
What drew Sam to Method Architecture?
For Sam, company culture played a major role in his decision to join the firm.
He had known some of the Method team through industry circles, which made the transition feel even more natural. Another draw was Method’s investment in the urban core, especially in a time when many firms are moving further out of city centers.
“I love that Method is leaning into its presence in the city rather than pulling away from it. That said a lot about the firm’s values,”
Favorite Projects and Career Highlights
Although Sam has worked on some high-profile national projects, the ones he reflects on most fondly are rooted in community and creative reuse. A few of his favorites include:
- The Granada Building in downtown San Antonio, a 15-story historic tower that was renovated into affordable senior housing.
- The Travis Building, an office-to-residential conversion that brought new life to an older downtown structure.
- Free Roam Brewing Co. in Boerne, a project that sparked a lasting friendship with the owners and combined design with personality and heart.
“I really enjoy adaptive reuse projects. They’re challenging but rewarding, especially when the client is doing it for the first time. You get to guide them through the process while also learning from them along the way,”
Favorite phases of a project: The Transition – From Design to Documentation
When asked about what part of the process he enjoys most, Sam said he’s drawn to the early transition from design to documentation.
“I love taking the conceptual design and turning it into something detailed and buildable,” he said. “You need strong technical knowledge to make something beautiful that also works within real-world constraints.”
Sam also serves on the San Antonio Zoning Board of Adjustments, representing District 2. His experience with zoning and code enforcement gives him an added layer of expertise when it comes to navigating city regulations and advocating for responsible design.
Philosophy and Approach
After 14 years in the field, one of the most important things Sam has learned is the power of listening. Whether meeting with a new client or starting a fresh project, he believes in slowing down and absorbing as much information as possible before jumping in.
“Clients often think they need one thing, but through conversation, you realize there’s a different solution that better fits their goals,” he said. “Being open, flexible, and collaborative from the beginning leads to better results.”
Looking Ahead
Sam is excited to get started on a variety of upcoming projects, including planned development Amenity Centers, as well as new retail and manufacturing pursuits that continue to broaden Method’s project portfolio.
We’re thrilled to have Sam on board and can’t wait to see the impact he will make. Welcome to Method, Sam!
